Moving can sometimes be overwhelming, especially if it is your first big move. This past year, I moved from Illinois to Colorado which is the furthest I have ever moved, and I was so nervous! I’ve compiled five tips for a successful move to make moving less of a scary task so you can focus on being excited about your new adventure!

1. Hire a Moving Company
I can’t explain enough how important it is to work with a moving company to get your belongings delivered safely! Most of the time, a moving company will come to your old house to help you securely pack all your items, load them into a moving van or truck, and deliver them to your new house, leaving you to get to your new location with ease. If you are in the colorado area, I recommend checking out Taylor Moving and Storage to help you with your next move. All of their moves include a truck, professional moving equipment including protective wrap, wardrobes and padding to help your belgongings from point A to point B. All local moves include their free full coverage insurance as well and they are honest, reliable and experienced. If you are looking for a moving company in the Boulder area, be sure to contact them to assist you!
2. Pack a separate suitcase of necessities to keep with you
You never know if there will be some sort of delay with getting the rest of your things. Sometimes weather can be unpredictable or something can go wrong. It is always important to have a suitcase packed with extra clothes, medications, toiletries, etc to help you make it through any unexpected delays in receiving your things! I also suggest using various storage bags to make it easy to grab what you need for extra clothes, toiletries and even laundry if you have it while you’re living out of your suitcase for a little bit.
3. If possible, ship your vehicle
When I moved to Colorado, I ended up driving the 12 hours with my dog in the passenger seat. If I could have a do-over, I would opt to ship my car and fly instead! It took so much longer to get to Colorado, and between the meals we ate on the road and the hotel rooms, it would’ve been the same price to fly and would have saved so much time. Especially if you are moving several hours away, choose to ship your car for time and convenience.
4. Research your new city before the move
It can be hard to completely start over in a new place! I spent a few weeks learning about my new city and getting excited about things to do and places to see. Doing this helped me feel less anxious about the move and ready for a new adventure. By learning as much as you can about your new city, you will feel less like a newbie and ready to take on whatever the city has to offer.
5. Don’t be afraid to reach out to new people
I made so many of my friends in my new city through Instagram! If it’s hard for you to approach people in real life or even know where to start with making new friends, use social media as a tool to meet other like-minded people. There are also apps you can use like Bumble BFF to meet other people looking for friends in your new location. Humans are social creatures, so it’s important to build up a social network once you’re in your new place!
I hope these five tips for a successful move are helpful to you on your next big move! Moving can be scary, but it can also be an amazing opportunity to get out of your comfort zone and grow as a person! I wish you the best of luck on your next move!
